White Oak, Texas is a city in Gregg and Upshur counties. The population was 6,469 according to 2010 census data. White Oak is located in the East Texas Piney Woods, and is home to White Oak ISD, which was “recognized” by the Texas Education Agency in 2009. The district covers most of the town of White Oak as well as a small portion of Clarksville City. The vast majority of the City of White Oak is served by White Oak ISD, while a small part of the northwestern corner of White Oak is in Gladewater ISD. Another small section of the southeast part of town attends Pine Tree ISD.
The establishment of a school in the area led to the development of the city of White Oak back in 1887. The city’s population increased drastically during the 1930s oil boom. The city gets its name from two trees that were growing nearby when they built the first school on site.
White Oak is perhaps best known for being the birthplace of country singers George Jones and Roy Acuff.
Famous people from White Oak include former NFL players Mike Barber, Byron Hunt, Sam Hunt, and Max McGee, as well as billionaire Kelcy Warren.
