Longview, TX

Longview, Texas is the largest city in Gregg County and is its county seat. It is located about 50 miles from Tyler and about 130 miles from Dallas/Fort Worth. Longview has a population of around 80,000 people – so it serves as an important commercial center for this region.

Longview’s nickname is “The Balloon Capital of Texas” for its proud tradition of hosting the annual Great Texas Balloon Race, which features hot air balloons flying over open space at sunrise to create stunning patterns against the sky while spectators enjoy food trucks and live music.

Longview, Texas was given its namesake in 1870 by Ossamus Hitch Methvin. He exclaimed there was a magnificent view from his home and named the town Longview. It is still today the county seat of Gregg County. In earlier days, it supported wagon trains traveling across the region and became a commercial district to provide for these people as they walked through.

Generations of East Texans have based their lives on the principles of hard work, and today this is still just as true. After the Second World War, Longview began developing a thriving manufacturing sector and it is currently home to many healthcare jobs.
